I’ll probably manage to do some more reading before the end of the year, but I doubt I’ll find something truly amazing. I didn’t meet the goal I’d set last year, but I did find some amazing short stories, and discovered some amazing authors. Here are my favorites, in the order in which I read them:
1 – The Wolf’s Bride by Aino Kallas
You can find it in the anthology: The Dedalus Book of Finnish Fantasy.
2 – Tom, Thom by K. M. Ferebee
3 – The Cat Who Walked a Thousand Miles by Kij Johnson
I highly recommend to check out Kij Johnson’s The Fox Woman as well.
4 – The Pauper Prince and the Eucalyptus Jinn by Usman Malik
5 – The Literomancer by Ken Liu
6 – The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary by Ken Liu
Both 5 and 6 are from Ken Liu’s The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories. I haven’t read the title story, The Paper Menagerie, this year; but you should still check it out, because it’s marvelous.
7 – The Museum and the Music Box by Noah Keller

24, 25, and 26 are from Ken Liu’s Invisible Planets: An Anthology of Contemporary Chinese SF in Translation. You should definitely go buy this one too. Not only is Ken Liu an excellent writer, he’s also an amazing translator, and his taste in stories is incredible.
I’d say I won’t manage to reach the goal I set a year ago /o\ I’ll keep reading short stories until the end of the year, and perhaps try again next year 😉
